Electron Wheels is an exciting new venture that marks the coming of age for electric transport in Scotland with the advent of a dedicated city centre outlet for electric bikes, fashionable cycle clothing and accessories in Edinburgh's Tollcross.
We officially opened on Friday June the 26th 2015 with the tape being cut by Green MSP Alison Johnstone.
Scotland is on the cusp of a revolution in personal transport. The future is electric and Edinburgh is the perfect city for electric bikes. Its terrain is easily conquered by an e-bike. Electric vehicles - both cars and bikes - are very economical to run. And not least, we already have a great cycling community.
We also think there is no reason why you cannot look good on a bike, so we will be offering a range of fashionable and practical clothing and accessories to go with your sustainable two wheeled personal transport.
From a green perspective, electric transport is a perfect match for Scotland's extensive renewable energy resources. We can become one of the first countries to close the loop between renewable energy production and sustainable transport consumption. The advent of shops such as Electron Wheels is a milestone on that journey.
Green MSP Alison Johnstone, who chairs Holyrood's cross party group on cycling, said:
“Increasingly, people tell me they want to take up cycling, but would like to see more segregated cycle paths and better maintenance of those that exist in order to help address concerns about safety on our roads.
There are also those new to, or keen to get back into cycling who may appreciate that extra help an electric bike gives, particularly on a long commute or the odd challenging Capital incline.
While I welcome any initiatives that can make cycling a more attractive prospect, I am particularly happy to see Electron Wheels set up shop right in the heart of Edinburgh, and I wish the exciting venture every success.”
